As a woman, you don’t feel empowered. You don’t have financial stability and you become susceptible to other grievances. Because you can’t protect yourself financially in a very large city where you’d like to have that protection for yourself. It sorts of initiates other toxins that models encounter in the industry. Unfortunately they go hand in hand,” said Aptekman…

The daily front row

How did your own experience as a model inform or inspire your work on The Model’s Bill of Rights? When I started modeling in New York, I was disappointed by the lack of financial transparency in the industry. You’d get a paycheck, but there would be no invoice or ledger of what the payment was for, so it became impossible to bookkeep. Also, payments are extremely delayed. I once did a job and had to wait 250 days, at which point [the payment] was whittled down from $2,000 to $400. That’s not a good situation. Especially in a city like New York. It leaves models incredibly vulnerable, in dire financial situations…

THRIVE GLOBAL

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why? Please share a story or example for each.

Dieting does not mean suppressing food intake!

Unfortunately, I think many models implement diets and workout regiments that are not sustainable. The word ‘diet’ is totally tainted. People have misconstrued diet to mean suppression of food when in reality diet is nutritious consumption. Relating to nutrition, my motto is: just as quickly as you lose, is just as quickly as you’ll gain. If you are starving and working out intensely to look good for those swim digitals coming up, you may very well shed weight and look the way you want for those snaps. BUT, you will quickly bloat and gain back even more…your body will punish you! TRUST ME, I’ve been there. Instead, you want to change the composition of your body over time by implementing realistic and healthy measures that work for YOU. It’s not a one size fits all and it really is all about being consistent.

Babson Magazine SMall Talk with simone aptekman

Simone Aptekman ’15 seems an unlikely source for information about the aftermarket auto-care industry. But she knows it well. In 1991, her parents, both Russian immigrants, founded Hi-Gear Products, which manufactures auto-care products developed by her father. When Aptekman was 14, tragedy struck her family when her father died suddenly. But her mother kept on with the company, which continues to thrive. Feeling strong bonds to the business, Aptekman and her brother, Daniel, MSM’16, plan to join Hi-Gear soon.
